for expats

Private lessons, one on one, from wherever you are. We start with what you actually need Dutch for: the bakery, your team meeting, the letter from the gemeente.

What we practise

Every lesson is built around you, and completely tailored to your needs.

Speaking

The part everyone puts off. We talk from minute one, in Dutch, about ordinary things, and I correct you in a way that sticks instead of stopping you mid-sentence.

Listening

Real Dutch, spoken at real speed: podcasts, the news, a voicemail from the dentist. We slow it down until your ear catches up.

Reading

Letters from the gemeente, your rental contract, the school app, the supermarket flyer. You bring what landed on your doormat.

Writing

Emails to colleagues, messages to the neighbours, forms that only exist in Dutch. Short, useful, and sounding like a person.

Exam training

Preparing for inburgering or the staatsexamen NT2? We work through the exam format, practise under time, and fix the gaps that cost you points.

Private lessons

One student, one teacher, one focus. All at your own pace.

How it works

  1. Send me a message

Tell me your level, more or less, and what you want to be able to do in Dutch. A guess is fine.

  2. Meet for 20 minutes

A free video call. We talk a little Dutch, I get a sense of your level, and you get a sense of me. No obligation after it.

  3. Start your lessons

Pick your weekly timeslots that fit your schedule. You get materials after every lesson and small things to practise in between.

What it costs

€50 per lesson of 45 minutes

  • Your first 20 minutes are free, so you can try before you decide.
  • Lesson materials and homework are included in the price.
  • Pay per lesson, or ask me about a package of ten.
  • Cancel or move a lesson up to 24 hours in advance.

Hallo, ik ben Lucy

Portrait of Lucy

I'm a Dutch teacher and I work with expats living in the Netherlands: people who can order a coffee but freeze in a meeting.

Dutch people switch to English the second they hear an accent, so you rarely get to practise. My lessons are the opposite of that: we stay in Dutch, we laugh at the mistakes, and we build sentences you will actually use this week.

Lessons are online, so it doesn't matter whether you're in Amsterdam, Groningen or somewhere else entirely.

Questions

I'm a complete beginner. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Plenty of students start at zero. The first lessons are slower and very practical, and you'll say your first full sentences on day one.

Which levels do you teach?

From absolute beginner up to B2: from your first words to holding a meeting or writing a proper email in Dutch.

How do the online lessons work?

We meet by video call and share a document that we both write in. You keep everything afterwards, so you build your own little textbook as we go.

Can you help me prepare for my inburgering exam?

Yes. We practise the exam parts you're worried about, work under exam time, and go over the mistakes that come back most often.

How often should I have a lesson?

I mostly recommend twice per week, but it all depends on your goals, determination and the speed you'd like to see progress.
